The artist

Rono Xia is a Los Angeles–based painter, largely self-taught, painting since childhood. She grew up in mainland China without ever seeing a white person in real life, and became fascinated by light-colored eyes — a fascination this piece, worked slowly from a photograph, comes out of. Painting one meant rendering a color she’d only ever seen from a distance — a study in looking closely at what she didn’t yet know.
